Vaccination Of Children Through Pharmacies For Seasonal Flu

Responding to media reports that pharmacies are unable to provide private vaccinations for seasonal flu, Chief Executive of the Royal Pharmaceutical Society Helen Gordon said:

"The vaccine is available to all children in at-risk groups free of charge on the NHS.

"There has been significant unexpected demand this year from parents wanting to vaccinate healthy children against seasonal flu. Last year, the NHS provided flu vaccinations for all children under five, but in previous years this group has not been routinely vaccinated unless individuals are in an at-risk group.

"Pharmacists who have been involved in the administration of flu jabs are familiar with vaccinating adults but not children. In order to vaccinate children, pharmacists would have to undergo extra training.

"Some pharmacies offer flu vaccination privately provided under a system of governance called Patient Group Directions, which are set by senior pharmacists and doctors in an organisation. Decisions around age limits for flu jabs in pharmacies rest with individual organisations. We understand some providers are considering reviewing their vaccination procedures in light of the current situation but this will take some time.

"Parents of children in at-risk groups should make an appointment with their local GP to get their children vaccinated against seasonal flu.

"The current advice from the Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation, the expert committee that advises the Government on flu vaccination, is that the greatest benefit will be achieved by increasing uptake in the at-risk groups.
