GW Prepares IT Leaders For Growing Health IT Demand

The GW Health Services Management and Leadership Department in the School of Public Health and Health Services (SPHHS) has been awarded a $4.6 million grant, entitled "GW HITECH University Based Training," by the Department of Health and Human Services, Office of the National Coordinator. The grant will increase the number of university-prepared persons possessing the requisite skills needed to serve in a variety of health information technology roles in public and private health care organizations across the United States.

The curriculum, that emphasizes IT-related critical thinking and health care analysis skills, will link the GW School of Public Health and Health Services Department of Health Services Management and Leadership; the GW School of Business Department of Information Systems and Technology Management; the GW School of Engineering and Applied Science Department of Computer Science; the GW School of Medicine and Health Services Department of Nursing Education; and the GW Medical Faculty Associates. These institutions will provide a cross-disciplinary perspective for the student body composed of clinician/public health leaders, health information management and exchange specialists, health information privacy and security specialists, and programmers and software engineers. GW will offer four eighteen-credit-hour certificate programs that can be completed within six months.

"This is an exciting opportunity for GW because it enables us to make a direct impact on the great demand for well trained Health IT professionals. Graduates of this program will learn the right skills to address the critical needs of organizations working to adopt health information technology into their business model," said Dr. Robert Burke, chair, GW SPHHS Health Services Management and Leadership Department and Principal Investigator on the grant.

The courses in this certificate program can be rolled into one-of-three nationally and/or regionally accredited masters degrees. The courses are currently in existence at GW in a traditional classroom format, but will be converted into an online or week-long, on-site format. Students will begin matriculating by fall 2010.
